This is the February 18, 2014 construction update for the Sahuarita Road Phase II Project.
This week, within the Segment 2A and 2B Projects, crews will be installing the base course of asphalt pavement within the remaining portions of Sahuarita Road, between La Villita Road and Nogales Highway (areas that were formerly construction detours/lane shifts across the new median). Final paving (with rubberized asphalt) is scheduled for the spring of 2014. Both new Sahuarita Road bridges at the Santa Cruz River are open to vehicular traffic. Remaining bridge work includes the installation of pedestrian safety railing on the westbound bridge and as such the westbound bridge sidewalk is closed until completion - pedestrians should use the eastbound bridge as an alternative route. In late February/early march both bridges will be painted and aesthetic treatments finalized. Work along the realigned Nogales Highway will pause for a few weeks and the installation of new landscaping will begin.
In January 2014, the contractor started work on the Segment 2C Project, which is the final portion of the Sahuarita Road Phase II project between Nogales Highway and the Eastern Town Limits (just west of Country Club Road). Ongoing work in this area includes relocation of existing utilities, clearing of the roadway right-of-way, and subgrade preparation in advance of the new roadway construction. Ongoing work is occurring near the intersection of Azatlan Avenue, where new underground pipelines are being installed.
As part of the ongoing construction efforts, drivers should be aware of all traffic control devices/signage and all speed limit reductions, as large equipment may be working near the roadways.
