[ARCHIVED] Sahuarita Road Construction Update – Tuesday 12/09/14

This is the December 9, 2014 construction update for the Sahuarita Road Phase II Project.

The Segment 2A (Sahuarita Road) and 2B (Nogales Highway) Projects were substantially completed in August 2014.

Within the Segment 2C Project, specifically between the UPRR tracks and Delgado Road, all Sahuarita Road traffic has been shifted to the new travel lanes, separated by a new raised median.

Major ongoing work this week includes the installation of new concrete box culvert (east of Delgado Road), new sidewalks and curb access ramps, as well as new landscaping and irrigation system. In the vicinity of Delgado Road, new fill material has been placed for the widened Sahuarita Road. Crews will continue installation of underground utilities, drainage structures, and are preparing the new sub-grade in advance of new curb/asphalt.

On Wednesday, December 10th, crews will be paving temporary detours near the the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) tracks in anticipation of the new railroad crossing being activated. If all goes according to plan, all Sahuarita Road traffic will be detoured to the permanent crossing on Thursday, December 11th. Once traffic has been shifted to the new railroad crossing, the temporary railroad crossing will be removed and closed to traffic. Both directions of travel along Sahuarita Road (westbound and eastbound) will remain open, but minor delays may be encountered during the lane shift. Moving traffic to the permanent railroad crossing will allow for construction of the remaining westbound Sahuarita Road lanes (between Nogales Highway and the FICO offices).

As part of the ongoing construction efforts, drivers should be aware of all traffic control devices/signage and all speed limit reductions, as large equipment may be working near the roadways.

A summary of the anticipated short-term (2-3 week) construction activities can be seen in the December 9, 2014 Look Ahead Schedule.
