Governor Ducey Issues Statewide Declaration of Emergency, Curfew Beginning Tonight
SAHUARITA, Ariz. — Governor Doug Ducey today issued a statewide Declaration of Emergency, including implementing a curfew starting at 8:00 p.m. tonight until 5:00 a.m. which expires Monday, June 8, at 5:00 a.m. unless he further extends it.
“This gives law enforcement an additional tool to prevent the lawlessness we’ve seen here and in cities nationwide,” he said. The declaration is in response to violent civil disturbances and riots that have been occurring in Arizona and nationally.
During the hours of curfew, people are not permitted to congregate in public, use, stand, sit or be present on public streets. They can, however, during the curfew hours travel to and from work, patronize or operate a business (i.e. picking up dinner), attend religious services, care for a family member, friend or animal, seek medical care, flee dangerous circumstances and travel for any of the above listed services.
“I am grateful to our residents for remaining calm during this unrest, and I trust we represent the type of community that will respect each other and honor the Governor’s orders,” states Sahuarita Mayor, Tom Murphy.
The order lists “travel” to include on foot, bicycle, skateboard, scooter, motorcycle, automobile or public transit, or any other mode of transporting a person from one location to another.
Sahuarita Police Chief John Noland stated, “We have great residents! The order allows people to shop, go out and dine, pickup food, and other necessary actions. I don’t anticipate our residents congregating in public and causing problems, and, therefore, I don’t believe our officers will have to take any enforcement actions.”
Violation of this order is a Class 1 misdemeanor with a fine of $2500 and punishable up to six (6) months in jail per A.R.S. 26-317.
The Declaration of Emergency also authorizes the Adjutant General to mobilize and call to activate all or such part of the Arizona National Guard as is determined necessary to assist with protection of life and property throughout the State.
